Report reveals overcrowding and infrastructure crisis in Eastern Cape schools, almost 170 pupils in one classroom

A recent report by the Public Protector has unveiled the shocking state of some schools in the Eastern Cape, including instances of extreme overcrowding with up to 164 learners in a single classroom.

The report highlights the lack of essential infrastructure such as administration blocks, libraries, and proper sanitation facilities.

The conditions of pit latrine toilets at some schools were found to be appalling, posing a serious risk to the well-being of learners and educators.

The article also discusses the efforts made by the provincial education department to address these issues, including the provision of prefabricated classrooms and the construction of ablution facilities.

However, the report emphasizes that much more needs to be done to ensure that all schools have the basic infrastructure required for effective teaching and learning.
